A specialised pearl expertise

The pearl market is complex. A natural pearl can be worth twenty to a hundred times more than a cultured pearl of the same appearance. Distinguishing the two requires a trained eye, radioscopy, or lab certification.

We work with specialised gemmologists. For meaningful pieces, we can arrange a complementary laboratory expertise (CGL, GIA).

Accepted: necklaces, sautoirs, parures, pearl strands, pearl rings and earrings. All origins (Akoya, Tahiti, Australia, South Sea) and natural pearls.

Pearl evaluation criteria

Nature

Natural vs cultured pearl: significant value difference.

Origin

Akoya (Japan), Tahiti, South Sea (Australia), freshwater (China).

Quality

Shape, lustre, orient, surface, color — all noted by labs.

Size

Diameter in mm: a 9-9.5 mm strand is worth far more than a 6-6.5 mm one.

FAQ

How do I know if my pearls are natural or cultured?

By eye it is very difficult. Clues: age (pre-1920 more likely natural), weight, irregularities. Only lab radioscopy certifies one or the other.

Do you buy Mikimoto strands?

Yes. Mikimoto necklaces are very sought-after, especially complete with signed clasp and original box.

Do damaged pearls have value?

A pearl with severely altered lustre loses most of its value. A strand can often be re-strung to restore visual coherence.

How much is a good Akoya strand worth?

A 7-7.5 mm Akoya strand of good quality starts at several hundred dollars. Hanadama strands (the highest Akoya grade) can reach several thousand.
